Outreach & Recruitment

What is On-The-Job Training?

On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a program that provides wage reimbursement to employers who hire and train eligible employees through San Joaquin County WorkNet or CalWORKs.

This program helps employers reduce personnel costs, save time, and gain access to a pool of pre-screened candidates who meet your job requirements.

OJT is part of the Employment and Economic Development Department’s efforts to support workforce development by helping businesses grow while creating lasting employment opportunities.

How Does It Work?

The OJT program helps you save money while hiring and training new employees. After you tell WorkNet what you’re looking for, they’ll pre-screen candidates and send you qualified applicants. You choose who to hire — there’s no cost for this service.

Once you hire someone, you’ll train them on the job and get reimbursed for up to 50% of their wages during the training period. To qualify:
  • Position must be full-time (32–40 hours/week)
  • Job must be permanent
  • Pay must be $19.00/hour or more
  • New hire can’t displace another worker
  • Must be paid the same as others in the same role

WorkNet saves you time and money with minimal paperwork and no service fees.
